Del Rio, Texas–Reports out of Laughlin Air Force Base, near Del Rio are that a supersonic jet crashed shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday evening near the U.S.-Mexico border.
One pilot was killed and the other was transported to Val Verde Medical Center for treatment.
According to officials at Laughlin, the crash involved a T-38 Talon-a “twin-engine, high-altitude, supersonic jet trainer used in a variety of roles,” including preparing pilots “for front-line fighter and bomber aircraft,” according to the U.S. Air Force’s website.
Investigators are on scene trying to determine a cause.
The names of the pilots have not been released, pending notification of next family.
Laughlin AFB is about 150 miles west of San Antonio, near Del Rio.
