Update:Major Accident Closes Interstate 37 Between Corpus Christi and San Antonio

Atascosa County–A major multi vehicle accident closed down Interstate 37 between San Antonio and Corpus Christi for several hours, Wednesday morning. Officials from both Atascosa and Karnes County were on the scene working to clean up the accident for several hours. Officials say that 30-40 vehicles were involved.

Both north and southbound lanes are open Wednesday night.

The chain reaction accident occurred around 7:15 Wednesday morning in an area of very dense fog that plagued the region overnight.Texas Department of Public Safety officials say that several of the vehicles caught fire and that several people were taken to area hospitals. There have been no reported fatalities however, at least 2 people are listed in critical condition.

Motorists are bring diverted at Mile Marker 86 and will re-enter the interstate at MIle Marker 92 near the city of Campbellton.

Alternate routes for motorists include US 181 or Texas Highway 16.
